- 1 Kate Bush The Dreaming Squeezed between the breakthrough and Hounds of Love – and the boldest record Kate Bush ever made.
- 2 Pink Floyd Animals In the shadow of Dark Side and The Wall, but Pink Floyd’s angriest and perhaps best-played album.
- 3 Neil Young On the Beach For years it was hard to find, and so it was forgotten. Now one of his most loved albums.
- 4 Marvin Gaye Here, My Dear Panned as a divorce album. Over time it has become one of the most honest soul records there is.
- 5 Fleetwood Mac Tusk Everyone expected Rumours 2. They got an odd, home-made double album that many bands now cite.
- 6 David Bowie Lodger The least talked-about Berlin record, but full of ideas that pop caught up with much later.
- 7 Radiohead Amnesiac Often seen as Kid A’s little sister. It has some of Radiohead’s very best songs.
- 8 Kanye West 808s & Heartbreak Mocked for the Auto-Tune when it came out. A decade later half the charts sounded like it.
- 9 ABBA The Visitors ABBA’s last album is grown-up and cold – about dissidents, break-ups and children growing up far too fast.
- 10 Joni Mitchell The Hissing of Summer Lawns The critics wanted more Blue. Joni Mitchell gave them jazz and social portraits far ahead of their time.
- 11 The Beach Boys Sunflower It sold poorly, but it is the Beach Boys’ most generous album – everyone in the band gets to shine.
- 12 Led Zeppelin Presence Zeppelin’s lowest-selling studio album, but “Achilles Last Stand” is among the best things they ever did.
- 13 Black Sabbath Sabotage The last truly great Sabbath album with Ozzy, and the most adventurous. Still holds up Timeless classic
- 14 Miles Davis On the Corner Panned by jazz critics. Today you can hear it in hip hop, electronica and modern jazz.
- 15 R.E.M. New Adventures in Hi-Fi It came after the big hit albums and got lost in the crowd – but it has some of the band’s best songs, like “E-Bow the Letter” with Patti Smith.
- 16 U2 Zooropa Made in a hurry and forgotten just as fast, but U2’s freest and strangest album.
- 17 Björk Medúlla A vocal experiment that scared many people off. Listen on headphones.
- 18 Daft Punk Human After All Dismissed as repetitive. Then Daft Punk played the songs live on Alive 2007 and everyone understood.
- 19 Judas Priest Sad Wings of Destiny Often forgotten behind British Steel, but this is where Judas Priest invented much of heavy metal.
- 20 The Kinks The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society Flopped in 1968 when everyone else was making psychedelia. Now perhaps the Kinks’ best album. Timeless classic
